The site of the Mayfair home of Lord Randolph Churchill, the childhood home of son Sir Winston Churchill, now an exceptional 1,859 sqft (172 sqm) two-bedroom lateral apartment at 48 Berkeley Square is for sale through selling agent Wetherell.
Located on the principal third floor of the grand Portland stone building at 48 Berkeley Square, the site of the former Churchill family residence, the apartment has a 37-foot-wide reception room with five sash windows, the tallest casements in the building, providing panoramic views over the gardens and trees of Berkeley Square. It is complete with a spacious entrance hall, kitchen, guest cloakroom and two ensuite bedrooms.
48 Berkeley Square was leased by Lord Randolph Churchill (1849-1895) between January 1874 and December 1879 as his London home where he lived with his wife Jeanette, Lady Churchill, the American-born socialite.
Their son Winston Churchill was born in November 1874 and until the age of 5 the Berkeley Square property served as young Winston’s London home, looked after by his devoted nanny Elizabeth Everest.
The Mayfair property was acquired because at the general election of 1874 Randolph Churchill was elected to Parliament as Conservative MP for Woodstock, so the family needed a London base close to the Houses of Parliament. In February 1880 Winston’s younger brother Jack Churchill was born so the Churchill family left Berkeley Square and moved to a larger house at 29 St James’s Place.
Now the apartment located on the site of the former residence of Lord Randolph Churchill at 48 Berkeley Square is for sale. The grand reception room provides a spacious modern living room with views over Berkeley Square.
The well-equipped, integrated kitchen is adjacent to the grand reception room and a guest WC and cloakroom lined with built-in wardrobes is located off the entrance hall.
Quietly located at the rear of the building are the two large double bedrooms, both with west facing aspects. The principal bedroom suite has a full wall of built in wardrobes and a large ensuite bathroom with a sauna and separate walk-in shower. The second bedroom also has built in wardrobes with an ensuite bathroom and walk-in shower.
48 Berkeley Square is now the only surviving residential property on the square. The original townhouse on the site was built in 1830 as the London home of Charles Grey, the 2nd Earl Grey, who was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1830 to 1834.
During the 1830s and 1840s Earl Grey lived at 48 Berkeley Square with his wife Mary and their 15 children. Between January 1874 and December 1879 the townhouse was leased by Lord Randolph Churchill.
In 1906 the townhouse used by Earl Grey and Randolph Churchill was demolished and replaced by the current nine story Edwardian Baroque style apartment building, designed by architect Frank Verity and built by Higginson & Co. The apartment building has the benefit of a passenger lift and porter.
Peter Wetherell, Founder and Executive Chairman of Wetherell said, “The grand apartment building at 48 Berkeley Square has been the site of the home of two British Prime Ministers, first Earl Grey, who Earl Grey tea is named after, and later as the childhood home of Sir Winston Churchill.
“The site of the former London home of Lord Randolph Churchill, is now an exceptional lateral apartment with a reception room with five sash windows providing panoramic views over the gardens and trees of Berkeley Square. This wonderful apartment provides the perfect pied-à-terre for someone wanting a London base in the heart of Mayfair.”
