The Walkie Talkie aka 20 Fenchurch Street has signed up Lloyd’s of London syndicate Ascot as its newest client.

Owned by Britain’s largest landlord Land Securities, the 38-storey-skyscraper is now 23% let.

Land Securities chief  Rob Noel told the London Evening Standard: “All our London buildings are ahead of plan. The issue is that the investment banks are dormant at the moment, and the ones with big trading operations aren’t looking for space. But there’s more to London than investment banks. Lawyers are taking space, other corporates are taking space in the West End.”

Noel also took a dig at rival skyscrapers dotting the capital’s skyline: “Two of them, 100 Bishopsgate and the Pinnacle, aren’t being built at the moment and that is two million sq ft of space.”

The Walkie Talkie is set to open in 2014.
