Figures from the Office for National Statistics show that the average property in the UK cost £285,000 as at December 2023. But what does that translate to when buying a property overseas?

In Spain, analysis by the Colegio de Registradores* shows that there are four provinces where foreign buyers account for at least 30% of home purchases (double the national average of 14.9%). Two of those provinces are Alicante and Malaga, where foreign buyers – many of them from the UK – seek second homes that provide easy access to Spain’s beautiful Mediterranean coastline and the world-class golf courses that dot the area.

Leading Spanish home builder Taylor Wimpey España is showcasing the kinds of properties that buyers with a budget of £285,000 can purchase in Alicante and Malaga. That equates to just shy of €334,000 at the time of writing.

In Denia (Alicante), just 100 metres from the beach, a two-bedroom/two-bathroom apartment at Bella Beach costs from €310,000 plus VAT. With spacious terraces from which to enjoy the sea views, the apartments are set in a peaceful residential area. The development features communal pools for adults and children, along with beautifully landscaped gardens. Open-plan kitchen and living spaces provide direct terrace access for seamless indoor/outdoor living.

Over in Malaga, bright, spacious homes at Green Golf in Estepona are priced from €340,000 plus VAT. The key-ready, three-bedroom townhouses overlook the fairways of Estepona Golf, with panoramic views that extend to the sea. The private, gated community comes with communal gardens and pools. The townhouses’ large, south-facing terraces are ideal for enjoying the spectacular natural scenery of the golf course and sparkling Mediterranean Sea.

Spain’s golf courses and beaches make it the world’s second most visited country, with only France attracting more tourists each year. A record 84 million visitors flocked to Spain in 2023, with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announcing record revenue of €108 billion for the year.

For visitors from the UK, Spain’s affordability is a major draw. The Property Guides 2024 Cost of Living Overseas Index flagged it as the cheapest country to live in – something that benefits all those visiting Spain, as well as those making a permanent move there.

“Spain’s affordability is the icing on the cake. Not only does it provide an outstanding climate, superb gastronomy, a wealth of leisure facilities and so much more, those who come here from the UK can enjoy the best of the Spanish lifestyle for less than they would pay back home. Add to that the impressive real estate offering in popular areas such as Alicante and Malaga and there’s a compelling case for UK property buyers to consider purchasing a home in Spain,” said, Marc Pritchard, Sales and Marketing Director, Taylor Wimpey España
