Plastic tycoon Sri Prakash Lohiahe – brother-in-law of Lakshmi Mittal, the fourth-richest person in the UK – has spent up to £50m converting a Georgian townhouse in Mayfair into a luxury family home.

Lohia is the chairman of Indorama Ventures, the largest polyester and plastic manufacturer in the world. He is estimated to be worth £2bn.

The grade-I-listed property was built in 1770 for General John Burgoyne, the Brit held responsible for Britain losing its US colonies during the American War of Independence.

Over the years, the property has been used as an office and then fell into disrepair.

The refurbished home comes with a dining room that seats 16 guests, swimming pool, cinema, music room, and a “vertical garden” in the internal courtyard wall. The basement has a gym, spa, sauna and staff quarters.

Lohia has also built a mews house with conference facilities, and a garage for his Bentley and Rolls-Royce. He also owns a Gulfstream jet and a 200ft superyacht called Sea Pearl.

Speaking about building the home, Lohia told an Indian newspaper: “It was a very frustrating experience and meant lots of travelling to source the material from Italy and France. But it was well worth the wait.”
