It would take a hairdresser 266 years in order to buy a dream home in London fit for Barbie, according to new research.

A new online calculator by Victorian Plumbing reveals how long it will take Brits to save up for a home similar to ‘Barbie’s’ dream house in different regions of the UK.

The UK housing market is out of control and out of reach for so many hard-working British workers who find it almost impossible to get a foot on the property ladder.

A teacher would need to save up for 56 years to afford a home in Birmingham, compared to 44 years for a nurse and 61 years for a football coach.

Even properties which are classed as averagely priced are out of reach for most UK workers trying to buy their first home let alone a dream home.

The iconic dream house typically aims to set you back £4.5M in London unsurprisingly, £1.2M in Scotland and £2.29M in East England.

To celebrate the iconic doll’s birthday and hotly anticipated summer film, the leading online bathroom retailer, Victorian Plumbing, has launched an online calculator https://www.victorianplumbing.co.uk/bathroom-ideas-and-inspiration/dreamhouse-online-calculator

which estimates how long it would take to save up for the famous doll house in real life.

With prices varying regionally, it works out how many years it will take to own your real-life plastic mansion around all areas of the UK.

Across UK regions such as Yorkshire, Northern Ireland, East England, East Midlands, North West England, Scotland, Wales and Midlands, London is the most expensive.

In London a teacher will take 144 years, a waitress 258 years, a nurse 113 years, a policeman 97 years and a pilot 48 years to buy that dream home in London. In Northern Ireland the dream home for a hairdresser will take 53 years!

Barbie, the once fashion-focused doll has tipped her toes into more occupations than hot-tubs having had over 200 jobs, including a vet, a chef and president. But how does a teacher, who typically earns between £25,000 to £32,000 a year, afford a three-story house with eight rooms, a lift, a pool, a party room?

If the blonde icon still worked as a waitress, it would take her 258 years saving £17,000 per year for her dream pad in London, compared to 118 years if she worked as a computer engineer and 98 years if she worked as a yoga teacher – let’s hope she’s trading crypto on the side!

Even during her stint as a pilot, jet-setting round the world, with a very tidy take-home of over £95,000 a year, it would take about 24 years to afford her dream house in Yorkshire with all the bells and whistles and double that in London.

With the calculation based on the average UK job salary, and desired location, whether that be trendy Shoreditch in London or the sprawling hills of Pembrokeshire, Victorian Plumbing will answer the question on everyone’s lips….can the blonde babe, in any of her occupations, really afford her home in reality? Maybe life is better in a Barbie world.

Joe Pascoe, chief marketing officer at Victorian Plumbing, had this to say about the launch of the online calculator: “Barbie has been a cultural icon for generations, and her dream home has been a part of many of our childhood memories. With over 200 professions under her belt, the iconic character has ‘bossed’ it and created her dream home”.
