Five alternative ways to spend an evening in London

London isnโ€™t just one of the worldโ€™s most visited cities โ€” itโ€™s also one of its largest and most diverse. Regardless of the time of year youโ€™re visiting, youโ€™ll find a long list of activities and attractions just waiting to be enjoyed.

If youโ€™ve been to the capital before, then itโ€™s probable that youโ€™ve done all of the cityโ€™s major attractions. Once youโ€™ve got them out of the way, itโ€™s time to dig into some of the alternative, often overlooked, things to do in the city. With that in mind, we thought itโ€™d be a good idea to put together some of our favourite, slightly different ways to spend an evening in London.

Look deep into the cosmos

Londonโ€™s light pollution means you canโ€™t see many stars without venturing away from the city. That is unless you swing by the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. The observatory routinely hosts evenings where visitors can enjoy stargazing from right in the heart of the city. These evenings are divided into two sections; first, youโ€™ll see an awe-inspiring planetarium show, and then youโ€™ll get to look at the cosmos via the famous Great Equatorial Telescope, which is more than 130 years old!

An evening at the casino

London excels in many areas. Yet, while people are aware that itโ€™s home to some of the worldโ€™s best museums, art galleries, and shopping, theyโ€™re often unaware that the UK capital is actually considered one of the worldโ€™s best casino destinations. Visitors looking for an alternative and suave way to spend an evening in the city can learn how to play poker online and then sit down at one of the cityโ€™s famous poker tables. The most elegant is probably the Crown London Casino, which features old-world decor thatโ€™s high on sophistication and opulence. Visitors will need to become a member before they visit the club. If membership isnโ€™t accepted in time, then online gameplay is always an option. In fact, online play can also help players who intend to play at the casino, since itโ€™ll ensure that theyโ€™re ready for action once they finally sit down at a table.

Visit a museum

You may have visited some of Londonโ€™s museums, but have you visited them at night when there are much fewer visitors? Many of the cityโ€™s museums host late-night openings, usually at least once a month. Itโ€™s particularly recommended to attend the Science Museum during one of its late nights; itโ€™s adult-only, and thereโ€™s typically plenty of exclusive talks and activities taking place. The Tate Modern is excellent on a late night too; for whatever reason, not many people attend, so you can explore the world-class art in relative peace. Plus, youโ€™ll get a great nighttime view of the city from the galleryโ€™s observation balcony.

Enjoy a movie outdoors

London is very much a movie city and is home to some of the worldโ€™s best cinemas. During the summer months, however, the movie magic is transported to the outdoors. There are a host of outdoor cinemas that run during July and August, including one at the Barbican. Tickets are expensive, but the film selections are excellent (think: artistic masterpieces rather than Hollywood blockbusters), and itโ€™s simply a treat to watch a movie on a warm summerโ€™s night in the Barbicanโ€™s famous Sculpture Court. With that said, itโ€™s best to pack a jumper or a jacket โ€” you never know when the chill might strike.

Take an evening stroll

Finally, consider visiting some of the business parts of the city. Theyโ€™re chaotic during the day, but practically silent once the sun sets, making them great places to take a gentle urban stroll. Canary Wharf and the surrounding areas, for instance, can be oddly beautiful once the offices have closed for the day. If youโ€™re in a position to do so, then cycling in these areas can also be highly enjoable. In any case, walking or cycling, we promise that youโ€™ll see the neighbourhoods in an entirely new light.
