Ealing is to get a £100m “Film Quarter” decked out with a cinema complex, 80 flats and a score of bars, restaurants and shops, it was announced today.

The plan in the New Broadway site in the centre of Ealing will also include a film museum and art studios.

Developer, Land Securities are going ahead with the redevelopment some four years after Ealing’s last remaining cinema, the Forum Picture Palace, closed in 2008.

Empire Cinemas bought the rights to redevelop the site but missed an October deadline to start work and were ordered to sell the square.

“We gave Empire every opportunity to build a new cinema and yet four years later the site is still derelict,” councillor Julian Bell, leader of Ealing Council, told media.

“We are not listening to any more excuses and are now progressing to develop the new quarter that Ealing has long been waiting for.”
