Now here’s a skyscraper that will make the Shard look puny.
Iraq is set to get a 604-storey skyscraper that will span 16.6 million square feet.
Proposed by AMBS Architects, the skyscraper will be built in Basra, an oil-rich city in Iraq.
The skyscraper, nicknamed “The Bride”, will be the first vertical city in the world.
Once built, The Bride will dwarf the current tallest tower, Dubai’s Burj Khalifa which is 2,723 feet tall.
The Bride is also taller than Saudi Arabia’s Kingdom Tower which is set to be 3,307 feet tall when completed in 2017.
According to the architects, the skyscraper “will break new ground in all disciplines of engineering, from structures to vertical transportation and services”.
On its website, AMBS Architects said: “This state-of-the-art development will be the epicentre of growth and investment, acting as a hub for fruitful production, thriving business and innovation, honouring the land’s historic significance as the birthplace of ancient Mesopotamia and civilisation.
“The city of Basra and its surrounding lands have been historically fertile and capable of producing abundant vegetation and agricultural crops. This reputation earned it the name ‘the bride of the gulf’ by local people.”
