Tory renters bill will fail a staggering 11 million tenants without change

The Renters (Reform) Bill in its current form will fail to properly abolish no-fault eviction and give renters security in their homes, say renters part of the London Renters Union (LRU).

The Renters Reform Bill returns to parliament today following major concessions to the landlord lobby announced last month. The most serious of these amendments is the indefinite delay of the no-fault eviction ban, pending court reforms.

Last week, members of the LRU marked the fifth anniversary of the tories’ promise to abolish section 21 by serving a four-metre-high eviction notice to Michael Gove’s front door.

Over 80,000 households have faced homelessness as a result of section 21 in the years since the government’s pledge. Over 300,000 renters were forced out of their homes last year by rent increases alone.

The LRU calls for the government to scrap the landlord lobby’s amendments and for the bill to be strengthened (full details below). The LRU calls on the Labour party to commit to a stronger bill that protects renters from unfair eviction and unaffordable rent increases.

Siobhan Donnachie, Campaigns Officer at the London Renters Union, said: “In its current state, the tories’ bill will fail to give renters any real security in our homes.

After five long years, there is still no end in sight to the slew of evictions forcing tens of thousands of us into homelessness.

Michael Gove has shown more interest in protecting the profits of his mates in the landlord lobby than ensuring everyone in this country has a secure place to call home.

Renters have had enough of the Tories and their broken promises. Labour must step up and commit to protect renters from unfair eviction and unaffordable rent hikes.”
