Portugal enshrines faster routes to citizenship in law

The President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, has recently signed into law a change that will speed up access to citizenship.

Residency visa applicants can now count their required five-year qualification period from the date of their application, rather than from the approval date of the process.

The change has the potential to knock months or even years off the time it takes for immigrants to obtain citizenship in Portugal.

“This is a very positive update for all those considering a move to Portugal. The new law means a faster, smoother route to citizenship via Portugal’s attractive range of visas. Anyone thinking of moving from the UK to Portugal can access the latest details of what this change means at our Moving to Portugal Show on 14th March 2024. We would also encourage independent financial advisors and other professionals to join us at the show to tap into the latest information,” said, Christina Hippisley, General Manager of the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce in the UK

The free-to-attend Moving to Portugal Show and Seminars are designed to provide UK citizens with a wealth of information on the legal, financial and lifestyle aspects of starting a new life in Portugal. The next show will take place in London on 14th March 2024, with a refreshed seminar programme and a range of expert presenters and exhibitors. In addition to the latest details on visas and residency, attendees can access information on renting and buying property in Portugal, the cost of living there, investment opportunities, health, education and more.

Held in London’s Pestana Chelsea Bridge Hotel, the event will run from 11.00 am to 7.30 pm on 14th March. The seminar programme will cover pensions, wealth management, visa and residency options (including residency by investment under the Golden Visa programme), legal property purchase steps, currency broker considerations and more.

Regional representatives will also be present, sharing insights into living in the Algarve, Lisbon – in particular the nearby coastal Cascais area – and the north of Portugal through presentations and panel discussions. Panel topics will also include pensions and wealth management in Portugal, an overview of visas and residency options and the new Golden Visa and residency by investment rules.

In addition to the scheduled seminars, a range of specialists will be present to provide further insights into moving to Portugal. Attendees can arrange free one-to-one discussions to access the latest information on specific topics, while there will also be plenty of opportunities for networking throughout the day.

“The Moving to Portugal Show serves as a one-stop-shop for detailed, up to the minute and comprehensive information, all of which is freely available. Attendees simply need to book online to secure their place,” added, Hippisley.

Tickets to the Moving to Portugal Show on 14th March can be booked online for free. For more information, please contact the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce in the UK: www.portuguese-chamber.org.uk or www.movingtoportugal.org.uk, tel 00 44 207 201 6638 / 00 44 7463 689666.
