New research has revealed the England areas with the least energy-efficient homes, with the Isles of Scilly coming out on top and Tower of Hamlets in London having the most energy-efficient homes.
The study by Enviro Homes Renewables studied the latest data from the Office for National Statistics, which showed the percentage of homes in each local authority with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) of Band ‘C’ or above.
It was found that the Isles of Scilly, located off the Cornish coast, has the lowest number of energy-efficient homes in England. The data studied showed that in 2022, just 14.09% of homes in the area had an EPC band ‘C’ or above, the lowest in England by nearly ten percentage points.
Coming in second on the list is Pendle, located in Lancashire. Based on the latest data, the area comes in with 21.83% of homes being graded an EPC Band ‘C’ or above.
The south Essex area of Castle Point comes in third place on the list. According to the latest 2022 data, just 24.84% of homes in the area have an EPC Band ‘C’ or above.
Fourth place on the list goes to another Lancashire area in Burnley. The latest data shows that just 25.10% of homes in the area have an EPC Band ‘C’ or above.
Rounding out the top five is Hyndburn, the third of four Lancashire areas to appear on the list. 25.38% of homes in the area were found to have an EPC Band ‘C’ or above in 2022.
Following this Staffordshire Moorlands (25.58%), Blackpool (26.46%), Barrow-In-Furness (26.67%), Bradford (28.63%) and Calderdale (29.46%) complete the top ten for the lowest number of EPC Band ‘C’ or above homes in England.
At the other end of the scale London town Tower Hamlets has the highest percentage of energy efficient homes with 76.11% being Band ‘C’ or above, followed by The City of London (64.74%) and Southwark (62.07%) respectively.
Ross Jones, Director Of Enviro Homes Renewables, said, “While there are many ways you can save money on energy for your home, having a low energy efficiency rating can make this very difficult from the start, and costs will add up, and with the current cost of living this can be a serious problem.
“However, if you live in one of these areas, you can improve your EPC rating by installing insulation, changing your lighting, replacing your boiler, and more.”
