“Mega-bolts” have been falling off the building

It might have only opened less than a year ago, but the Cheesegrater is already falling to bits.

The Leadenhall Building, to give the skyscraper its proper name, is in need of major repairs after some of the 3,000 bolts used in the building started to fall off.

Last year, parts of five 13cm bolts fell from the Cheesegrater prompting an investigation into the cause.

As a “precautionary measure”, some of the bolts will be replaced at a cost of £6m, with the work likely to take until the end of the year.

Steelwork contractor Severfield is in discussions with developer British Land and engineering firms Laing O’Rourke and Arup over the liability for the problem, after the collapse of the original bolt-supplying firm Andrews Fastners.

Severfield said: “The group incurred costs of £1m relating to the remedial works programme during the financial year and estimates that its total costs will be in the region of £6m.”
