Thought London was the only expensive place to rent a home in Britain? Think again.
According to property website Rightmove, Esher is the most expensive place to rent a home outside London with renters shelling out £2,000 a month for a two-bedroom property. Rents in the Surrey town have gone up by 4.1% in the past year.
In London, you’d have to pay £2,216 for a two-bedroom property.
Next on the list is Oxford where renters are paying £1,612 on an average followed by Weybridge, Surrey, where average rents are £1,446.
According to Rightmove, the average asking rent on a two-bedroom property, excluding London, is £677 a month.
Sam Mitchell, head of lettings at Rightmove, said: “People moving out of the capital to places in the south east have contributed to double-digit growth in rents in some of the most expensive places like Oxford and Henley-on-Thames.
“Factors like being close to good schools and transport links will always come at a premium, and as these figures show it’s wrong to think that anywhere outside of London will definitely be cheaper than in London.”
